Body Massage

Massage can be very relaxing, soothing and comforting, and is excellent for stress relief and for conferring a sense of well-being, and, indeed, self-worth. Massage has profound effects on the body. It improves circulation (and can temporarily lower blood pressure), aids digestion, relaxes and soothes muscles, relives pain, and stimulates the lymphatic system, thereby aiding the elimination of waste products. It assists the release of endorphins, the body’s feel-good hormones. It can also improve the quality of rest and sleep.

The connection between high levels of stress and ill-health are well-known; the relaxing and therapeutic qualities of touch (and therefore massage) have long been overlooked in our increasingly mechanised culture – particularly in Britain!

A typical (one hour) massage treatment begins on the back, neck and shoulders, followed by backs of legs, fronts of legs, arms and hands, then face. Some clients require massage of the abdomen, or the buttocks (tension can build up here too!); others don’t like the face being done. The procedure to be followed will be determined before commencement, taking into account any particular areas of concern, e.g., lower back pain.

Regular massage with oils is deemed important in the ancient Indian system of Ayurvedic medicine. The Chinese were practising massage around 5,000 years ago, and Egyptian tombs contain evidence that massage was important in their culture. It was also employed in Greek and Roman times.

Sports/Remedial Massage

Sports massage can be used to aid recovery from injury or an event, or as part of a long-term training programme. It is a form of massage which focuses on muscle systems used in athletic activities. It can combine Swedish style massage with trigger point compression and neuromuscular techniques to reduce soreness and help enhance power, endurance and flexibility.

A sports massage may be given to deal with specific problem areas, e.g., lower back or shoulders; as a pre or post event treatment; or as a preventative treatment to help reduce injury risk.

Remedial massage can be seen as an extension of sports massage, where actual injuries are dealt with, e.g., tennis elbow, hamstring strain or groin strain. A variety of techniques are used and the application of cold or heat may be called for.

Indian Head Massage

Indian Head Massage originated with the ancient Indian healing system of Ayurveda, which dates back around 4,000 years; it can be regarded as the oldest system of holistic therapy. It is only in recent years that Indian Head Massage has gained popularity in the West, where the procedures have become formalised, though every practitioner develops their own style of delivery. The massage procedure can be delivered over clothes where deemed necessary, and lends itself to being provided in the office or workplace.

An Indian Head Massage includes work on the upper back, neck, shoulders, arms, scalp and face. It improves circulation to the skin in these areas, assists with lymphatic drainage, relieves tension, headaches and eyestrain, improves concentration, boosts the immune system, and confers a general feeling of well-being.
